Dr. Narayana Murthy Cancer Treatment : Personal Experience
Cancer is the name given to a collection of related diseases. Cancer can start almost anywhere in the human body, which is made up of trillions of cells. Normally, human cells grow and divide to form new cells as the body needs them. When cells grow old or become damaged, they die, and new cells take their place. When cancer develops, however, this orderly process breaks down. As cells become more and more abnormal, old or damaged cells survive when they should die, and new cells form when they are not needed.
These extra cells can divide without stopping and may form growths called tumors. Many cancers form solid tumors, which are masses of tissue. Cancers of the blood, such as leukemias, generally do not form solid tumors. Cancerous tumors are malignant, which means they can spread into, or invade, nearby tissues.
In addition, as these tumors grow, some cancer cells can break off and travel to distant places in the body through the blood or the lymph system and form new tumors far from the original tumor. The branch of medicine dealing with the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of cancer is called Oncology.
A medical personnel dedicated to practising oncology is called an Oncologist. Though later stages of cancer are fatal, but with the current advances in the field of medicine, there has been much improvement in the chances of survival. Cancer cells are cells gone wrong in other words, they no longer respond to many of the signals that control cellular growth and death. Cancer cells originate within tissues and, as they grow and divide, they diverge ever further from normalcy.
Over time, these cells become increasingly resistant to the controls that maintain normal tissue and as a result, they divide more rapidly than their progenitors and become less dependent on signals from other cells. Cancer cells even evade programmed cell deathdespite the fact that their multiple abnormalities would normally make them prime targets for apoptosis.
In the late stages of cancer, cells break through normal tissue boundaries and metastasize spread to new sites in the body. Cells become cancerous after mutations accumulate in the various genes that control cell proliferation. According to research findings from the Cancer Genome Project, most cancer cells possess 60 or more mutations. The challenge for medical researchers is to identify which of these mutations are responsible for particular kinds of cancer.
This process is akin to searching for the proverbial needle in a haystack, because many of the mutations present in these cells have little to nothing to do with cancer growth. Different kinds of cancers have different mutational signatures. However, scientific comparison of multiple tumor types has revealed that certain genes are mutated in cancer cells more often than others.
For instance, growth-promoting genes, such as the gene for the signaling protein Ras, are among those most commonly mutated in cancer cells, becoming super-active and producing cells that are too strongly stimulated by growth receptors. Some chemotherapy drugs work to counteract these mutations by blocking the action of growth-signaling proteins.
The breast cancer drug Herceptin, for example, blocks overactive receptor tyrosine kinases RTKsand the drug Gleevec blocks a mutant signaling kinase associated with chronic myelogenous leukemia.
Other cancer-related mutations inactivate the genes that suppress cell proliferation or those that signal the need for apoptosis. These genes, known as tumor suppressor genes, normally function like brakes on proliferation, and both copies within a cell must be mutated in order for uncontrolled division to occur. For example, many cancer cells carry two mutant copies of the gene that codes for p53, a multifunctional protein that normally senses DNA damage and acts as a transcription factor for checkpoint control genes.
Cancer can cause many different symptoms. Most often these symptoms are not caused by cancer, but by benign tumors or other problems. If you have symptoms that last for a couple of weeks, your doctor will do a physical exam and order tests or other procedures to find out what is causing your symptoms.
If you do find out you have cancer, your doctor will order another set of tests or procedures to figure out its stage. Stage refers to the extent of your cancer and is based on factors such as how large the tumor is and if it has spread. Once your doctor knows the stage of your cancer, he will be able to suggest treatment and discuss your prognosis with you.
Understanding your cancer and knowing what to expect can help you and your loved ones feel more in control and cope with your diagnosis. Symptoms of Cancer : Cancer can cause different symptoms, such as abnormal bumps, night sweats, or unexplained weight gain or loss.
The available treatment of cancer, particularly in developing countries like India, is pathetic. Chemotherapy may be a good option in some cases, but in majority of situation it only makes the life of the patient miserable. In this context, it is quite heartening to note that there are some doctors in India who treat cancer effectively. You might be surprised to hear this name.
Yes, he is. But, I am talking about a doctor who is more than 65 year old, and who is treating patients suffering from cancer and diabetes, among others since three decades. However, you can donate there if you wish. It shows that he is not doing this to make money. Actually, you will find many doctors and quacks claiming to find treatment for cancer. Narayana Murthy is not like them. His treatment methodology is also quite simple.
The treatment is available on Tuesday and Sunday. If you are a new patient, you need to be there on Tuesday. The treatment is done on first-come-first-serve basis. Hence, be ready to stand in the queue. Further, you are not required to take patient there. Anyone who is staying with the patient can go there with reports and medical history.
As I have mentioned earlier, chemotherapy is nothing short of a slow death. I admit that in some cases it works wonderfully. But, not in all cases! For example, take the case of Glioblastoma Grade IV brain tumor.
There is no cure of this disease in the convention medicine. Death on Diagnosis! The treatment option is surgery followed by Radiation and Chemotherapy Temozolomide. If a patient follows this route, he may survive for few more months, in some cases up to years.
This is not a treatment, friend. This is a slow death. Side effects of surgery, radiation and Temozolomide are too much to bear with. Fortunately, a patient will not have to bear with so many side effects with Dr.
Narayana Murthy treatment.Do we believe that the earth is flat or the sun revolves around the earth? The answer is a big NO and why because through scientific enquiry we proved that that is not the case. Has the chance of surviving cancer increased over the last 50 years? The answer is a big YES and the reason being the same scientific enquiry. All treatments used in modern medicine undergo rigorous scientific scrutiny.
Any treatment or drug approved for cancer treatment undergoes through the following phases or also called as clinical trial. Phase 1 tests drug safety, phase 2 efficacy and phase 3 if it really works better than what is currently available.
This whole process is followed for all drugs and not only cancer drugs. The whole process takes about 10 years and costs billions of dollars.
It is because of clinical trials and serious regulations that we have been able to prove that chemotherapy really works and it is just not plain chance. Things will only improve in the future. Unfortunately none of the treatments for cancer in Ayurveda or other alternative fields have gone through this rigorous process to prove their effectiveness. Few anecdotal evidences of cure by ayurvedic medicines does not establish it as the gold standard.
If an ayurvedic medicine really worked well in cancer then the pharma companies would be the first to test it and do clinical trials and if they proved it worked they would market it and make billions of dollars of money.
Many patients with curable cancers die because they fall in to the trap of false information provided by social media, Internet, friends and relatives that ayurveda cures cancer. An industry has mushroomed in Kerala and Shimoga and some smart businessmen are laughing their way to the bank fooling gullible people. The medicines are also couriered to the patients house. As an oncologist I will be the first one to use ayurvedic drugs if it is scientifically proven to work in cancer.
Note: This post is not disrespectful to ayurveda or other types of alternative medicine. It was purely based on scientific arguments.
It is also not disrespectful to Indias culture and heritage. Oncologist, optimist, blogger, smart phone addict, cooks awesome food. View all posts by oncologist diary.
